If it’s a hands-on job, chances are you’ll find a place to learn it without having to pay to go to school.

If you’ve been recently laid off from a job and are in the middle of a long job search, it’s more likely you’ll be leveraging your skills and expertise in a specific area rather than going head-first into a field you don’t really know anything about. However, that’s not to say you can leverage what you know, too. This can give you an advantage over the competition if you can both align your skills and your knowledge into a fine-tuned machine.

Polite Aggressiveness

Being aggressive is something that a lot of people can’t really get behind. Aggressiveness can often be viewed negatively by others. However, it doesn’t have to be this way; you can be the friendliest person in the world, and still succeed at being aggressive without it costing you interviews and job offers. Aggressive in this sense means that you want to be on top of things, usually with: taking the initiative with a job interview; making follow-up calls and emails to potential employers; branching out with your connections to see if there’s anything you can do. This is a skill that’s tough to master, but it’ll pay off when you do. These types of things leave a specific impression that does not occur often in the recruiting world.
