Your resume is usually the first thing employers see about you. If you aren’t getting any interviews, the first thing you should look at is your resume. The most common reason why employers pass on resumes is that they don’t have the skills or experience they’re looking for. This tends to happen when job seekers don’t include keywords in their resume from the job description. You can fix this by creating individual resumes with the keywords and skills that are relevant to each position you’re applying for. You should also make sure that your resume, and cover letter if you have one, are up to date.
Your online activity
We’ve shared many times about how social media can influence your job search. Employers these days tend to do light searches on candidates before the interview. Social media and other accounts may come up in the search. If you have social media accounts, its important to keep them clean and relatively professional if your name is on them.
Gaps in your work history
Unexplained gaps in your work history can do harm to your job searching efforts. Employers skip over resumes with gaps because they can find resumes that don’t have any. You might not be getting any interviews because your work history gaps aren’t addressed. You should make sure to address these gaps and provide proper information for each one. The important part here is to be honest and straightforward. Examples of work history gaps may include job searching, parenting duties, and education.
Lack of necessary skills
Many jobs require special skills & knowledge. If you apply for jobs without reading the descriptions & requirements carefully, you might be applying for something you aren’t qualified to do. Or, you may be qualified in education and experience, but you’re missing a few key skills. Double-check the job description and make sure that you’re adding in keywords from the requirements section into your resume.
