A night shift job can be a great way to earn extra money and explore a different working environment. However, there are many things to consider before making the switch. If you’ve always worked daytime shifts in your career, going straight into the graveyard shift may land you in hot water fast. We recommend following these tips to help you smoothly adapt to a night shift routine that won’t drive you crazy.

1. Consider your commute

Unlike the day shift, starting work at around midnight means you’ll be heading to work in the dark. You’re likely not accustomed to driving at night, or perhaps you’re not a “morning” person. That is, it takes you some time to fully wake up after getting out of bed. Both of these things can be bad for your drive to work. A shorter commute, or one that requires less turns, would be best in this situation.

2. Have a game plan ahead of time

You won’t smoothly adapt to a night shift routine without having a game plan. This includes adjusting to the new sleep schedule, meal planning, and daily commitments. Winging it on the spot probably won’t help you much, and in the case of the new sleep schedule, it may even work against you. Always make sure to allocate plenty of time and space for sleep; don’t say “yes” to too many commitments; and don’t rely on fast food to feed you all the time.

3. Ask for help when you need it

Night shift work sometimes has a reputation for attracting independent workers and people who prefer working alone. This is all fine and good, until you find yourself stuck in need of help. Since fewer people work night shift, it might be more difficult finding someone to help you. However, don’t let that stop you from doing what you need to do to succeed in the work. Familiarize yourself with the resources & people at the workplace that are there to help you when you need it.

4. Don’t neglect your mental health

For some people, night shift work can have negative effects on their mental health. While you should always find work at a time and place that’s healthy for you, many workers don’t have a choice. If you’re one of these people, try to put extra effort into improving your mental health, both during work and outside of work. Everyone is different, so make sure you take the time to understand your specific needs.
