  • Taking phone calls & relaying messages

  • Taking & distributing meeting notes
  • Filing paperwork

In order to succeed in the job, administrative assistants need to possess or quickly learn certain skills. These skills include, but are not limited to:

  • Multitasking
  • Time management
  • Prioritizing
  • Strong communication
  • Strong organization
  • Intermediate/advanced computer proficiency
  • Fast decision-making & information processing

Where can you go with administrative assistant experience? Often, administrative assistants gain hands-on experience in certain roles at the specific company. It gives them insight into what they’re good at, what they like and dislike, and where they want to go in the future. Administrative assistants in clerical environments may be able to transition into more regular company roles.

With enough experience, they may also be able to transition into lower-level leadership and management roles. In many cases, they may even be able to get into some executive positions.
